Torrent Systems Partners with FileTek to Deliver Next Generation Data Management and Analytical Solutions-Joint Solution Gives Customers Rapid Access to Volumes of Valuable Archived Data Needed to Drive CRM and E-business Initiatives

Cambridge, Mass. (August 16, 2000) - Torrent Systems, Inc. (Torrent®), the first provider of scalable solutions for analyzing massive volumes of clickstream and transaction data, announced today that is has partnered with FileTek, Inc. Under this agreement, the two companies have integrated Torrent's flagship product Orchestrate and FileTek's StorHouse® to form a powerful solution that manages, mobilizes and analyzes the massive quantities of data necessary to drive business intelligence, customer relationship management (CRM), and e-Business initiatives. StorHouse solves the problem of managing the explosion of data for e-business, telecommunications and other firms by providing an end-to-end data management solution.

"By managing all data relationally, and then mobilizing it with Orchestrate, FileTek shatters the notion that archived data retrieval is too slow and too imprecise for today's business environment," says Tom Ebling, President and CEO of Torrent Systems. "With those barriers cleared, businesses will be able to pipe massive volumes of customer data into their CRM and e-Business applications and in return, discover hidden patterns in the behaviors of their customers."

Orchestrate uses the power of parallel processing to enable high-performance data transfer between FileTek's StorHouse applications and Unix servers-giving customers high-speed access to transaction data stored on tape. Businesses can now access relational data at the row (or record) level and mobilize massive quantities of information without needing to pass it first back to disk. This allows database users to exploit fully cost-effective storage media like tape and optical devices, without sacrificing rapid and precise accessibility to the data. As part of this agreement, Torrent and FileTek also will embark on joint sales and marketing activities demonstrating the value of the combined solution.

"FileTek's partnership with Torrent greatly enhances the value of StorHouse in enterprise data management systems," says David Beamer, President and COO of FileTek. "With the parallel file transfer offered by Orchestrate, FileTek is able to provide accelerated access to archived information. In addition, this partnership provides StorHouse customers with a seamless extension to Orchestrate, the only solution that allows companies to build the advanced analytical applications necessary to derive business insight from massive quantities of data."

Business analysts project that demand for data will grow over 100 percent per year for the next several years; e-Businesses are likely to see data volumes grow 400 percent. As the size of enterprise data warehouses swell into the terabytes and beyond, more and more companies are looking to tape and optical devices for cost-effective storage of atomic level detail data like credit card transactions, call-record detail and clickstream data. Other solutions for mobilizing data stored on tape run sequentially on one processor dramatically limiting the amount of data that can be processed or lengthening the actual processing period. The increasing speed of Internet time, coupled with the rapid growth of data volumes, continually forces companies to look for faster ways to integrate and analyze data, including archived transactions and demographic data.

With Orchestrate's component-based architecture, users can meld company-specific business-intelligence tools, components built in Orchestrate, as well as a suite of Orchestrate analytical components, to create high-value custom applications that speak directly to a company's business initiatives. Orchestrate's framework, a scalable, parallel-processing platform that fully leverages the power of multi-processor machines, then drives these custom applications, allowing them to process massive amounts of data with unrestricted speed and analytical complexity. The business insight that results from this combination of custom applications with unbridled power has generated millions of dollars in ROI for companies like Fingerhut and United Airlines.
